Several people e-mailed me in response to my letter regarding my experience with the 10:30 Mass on September 29th. Several more talked with me after each of the Masses this weekend. The same bottom-line question was asked, “What can we do?”
It is up to each and everyone of us to contribute to the life of our parish. We are a Catholic Community and with that, there are responsibilities that are shaped in many ways; one way is being a steward. Our annual Stewardship Renewal is underway. Every registered household has received a packet from the parish this week seeking your commitment, not to me but to each other. What can we do? Prayerfully read the materials sent to you and respond to the three areas necessary to thrive as a Catholic parish today - GPS-Give, Pray, Serve.
Many make a commitment to the community in all three areas. There are many more who are reluctant to make a commitment to the community than those who do. Of the 649 registered families in our parish only 243 contribute financially; of the 1954 registered parishioners only 209 individuals are involved in ministries. Of the 1954 parishioners, this year we averaged 420 who worship together as a community on any given Sunday. The only way things can change is if people make their spiritual life as Catholics a priority. Those who asked, “What can we do?” are already hitting the mark. I am asking those who have yet to commit to seriously begin the journey of Stewardship with our community of faith. It is only then that we can be assured that we will be a vibrant community for many years to come.
The more people who commit to ministry the fewer times people will be scheduled to serve. Take a look at the ministry catalog, the greatest needs can be found on the inside cover. Can you make a commitment in one area? Again, your commitment is not to me, it is to the present and future of the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart.
For some, this month will be a Stewardship Renewal. For others, it is a challenge to begin to take the first steps in being an active Catholic in the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart and making a commitment for the first time to one another. “What can we do?” Turn on your Catholic GPS!
