The Beatification of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen has been in the news lately. Many of the older folks (not me) will remember his TV series “Life is Worth Living.” The program explained the Catholic Faith and viewers were able to submit questions about Catholic faith, theology, spirituality and more. The show enabled Catholics to deepen their understanding of their Catholic Faith and at the same time many non-Catholics joined our faith because of the program which was on ABC stations.
I realized this weekend that we as practicing Catholics don’t always understand our faith and we constantly need to update our understanding. How we do this is a puzzle. We must desire to be life long learners. Often people leave Catholicism due to misunderstandings of faith teachings; sometimes we even cause further confusion when we share our misunderstandings as fact with others.
You know better than I what questions you have regarding our faith, or what questions others have. So, I was thinking that maybe we can have “Question Box Homilies” periodically through out the year. I would be happy to field questions from parishioners on matters related to Roman Catholicism, church history and theology, spirituality, spiritual practice, theology (in general) religion, Papal Teachings, or faith in general/world religions etc. social/environmental justice, the practice of ministry and the parish.
This is an opportunity to ask information about something you wish was a topic of a homily but hasn’t been addressed. It’s also a chance to get answers to nagging questions you’ve had about our faith.
If YOU have a question that you’d like me to respond to in a homily or this letter, mail it to me at [email protected] with the subject line “Question Box” or give it to me in writing in person, through the postal mail, or by leaving it for me at church.
No, I am no Bishop Sheen, believe me, I am not about to be beatified (becoming a saint)! But I will do my best to keep us all informed in our Catholic Faith.
