Throughout our formative years, it was drilled into the depths of our very being that we were to be good Catholics and good citizens. That was taught not by words but by example. Each one of us was encouraged to be involved at church. Altar serving, ushering, and choir were the only options at the time, and all of us were involved. Then as we entered high school we helped out the sisters clean the church, train altar servers, and help whenever needed.
As citizens, we followed the example of our folks and served on town committees, helped clean up the town parks and the schoolyards when the word went out. To this day I always make sure I am involved in town is some way. For years I served on the Recycling Commission and now am serving on the Board of Trustees for the Library and the Executive committee of the Friends of the Gladys E. Kelly Library. I am working with people who are also practicing their faith. Guess we all got the same message growing up.
I bring this to your attention as we again open up at-large positions on the Pastoral Planning Team (PPT) and vacant Parish ministry positions. The Pastoral Planning Team is the decision-making body of the parish. This is the team that sets the direction of the parish and its ministries. Everyone has wisdom to bring to the table and is welcome to serve in leadership roles.
There are two youth at-large positions that serve one year and one adult at-large position for a three-year commitment. The PPT meets on the fourth Monday of the month from 7-9 P.M. We do communicate by e-mail during the month, so the commitment is only 22 hours per year (we don’t meet in July).
We also have openings to serve on our Parish leadership teams which meet the second Monday of each month from 7-9 P.M. This is a 20-hour commitment during a whole year. We are looking for people to serve on the Worship, Stewardship, Formation, Finance, Building and Grounds, Operations, Community Engagement teams. Information on the work of each team is on our website and in printed form at the doors of the church. Call the office for more details.
I am sure there are many ways to get involved in town, but at least I can bring to your attention the many ways you can participate here at Sacred Heart. I also promise the friendships that form from involvement are life-long. So, answer the call to be a good Catholic, and a good citizen and help us all to become the parish and community God calls us to be.
