We continue our Lenten journey focus on “Fixer-Upper” and have taken the time to examine the issues in our spiritual selves that are broken, or the hurts or baggage that we are carrying around that need to be addressed. Sometimes we don’t go deep enough; for example, it is not enough to say “I’m lonely or overwhelmed” we need to look at what might be the cause of the loneliness or the reason we are overwhelmed. Don’t rush, take your time to sit with the hurts and find out what’ behind it. Only then can we come up with a blueprint and design for the renovation of our spiritual selves. Like all blueprints and designs they are only a start, others need to see what we have come up with and make suggestions and share wisdom with us. That’s why the spiritual journey should never be done alone.
Who do we journey with? Again, I encourage joining in a small group that you trust and can share the spiritual journey. Don’t go alone. Some of us may need some one on one attention for a time, and this is where our Stephen Ministers are ready to walk with individuals on the faith journey.
This week we come to what we are calling “Demo-Day.” And demo is not just demolition, it is also a demonstration. Both are a large part of the life journey. Think of what we did here as we renovated our church. Before we could do any work in the church, we had to repair the leaky roofs, and gutters that were causing water build up in the cellar and crawl space beneath the church and parish center. Remember the work to remove all the asbestos tiles and dispose of the hazardous waste? All that demolition was necessary before we could begin to paint and install new flooring and angle the pews.
Expand the physical work we have done to the spiritual life and we can understand why the church through the words of Jesus gives chance to “cultivate the ground and fertilize the soil so that we are restored to wholeness.
As our Lenten journey continues, let’s work together to support each other and all the members of our Diocesan family encouraging each other along the life-long spiritual faith journey!
