Many of us (especially people my age) remember the television series “The Waltons” that came out in the early 70’s. It was a heartwarming show about a family that looked after each other, prayed at every meal, and reminded us of how important we are to each other. Many who watched it dreamed to have such a close-knit family.
We celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The Holy Family is a more accurate picture and representation of true family life. The challenges were many: born in a stable where animals sheltered, due to no room in the Inn. They had to flee to Egypt to escape King Herod’s attempt to kill all young children. Jesus is missing for three days…You get the picture. Every one of our families faces challenges. Many of us have high expectations of what family life should be and forget that we are all on a lifelong journey and growing at different rates. Sometimes we need to reach beyond our own household to find a listening ear.
The old proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is key and central to who we are as the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart. Many times, I hear our elderly rejoice at the excitement coming from the vestibule of the church when the preschool to first graders assemble. “Mass here is so exciting and life-giving.” The energy from the second to fifth graders gathering for “Formed around the tables” reminds some Art Linkletter’s “Kids say the darndest things.” We all benefit from gathering together as a parish family.
Each week when the Men of Hope gather virtually on Saturday mornings they plant to seeds of strong family life. The wisdom of young and older men encouraging each other to grow in their faith and support each other as Catholic men is just planting the seed for conversations that happen throughout the week.
The Alpha community opens the door to new and wonderful relationships not only with Jesus Christ but gives us the courage to bring our needs to others who can help us on the faith journey. Again, the wisdom of various ages assists us in becoming stronger in our own family lives.
Sometimes we all need a listening ear. We need someone who can help us sort things out and give us the wisdom that comes from another perspective. How good it is to be able to call upon trained “care givers” through Stephen Ministry. Stephen Ministers are care givers who point the way to Jesus “the cure giver.”
None of our families will ever be like the scripted Waltons. Let’s be reminded that we need each other for support, direction, and encouragement on the faith journey of life. May we rejoice this Christmas season in the gift of each other.
