Being church in a different way, looking at the Catholic Community of Sacred Heart through a new lens; that is the challenge we face each and every day as we navigate through this pandemic. We are doing everything we can to gather safely each weekend for Mass at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday and 9:30 A.M. on Sunday. Someone pointed out that I sanitize hands during Mass more than they do the whole day! It is necessary for me to make sure that everyone is as safe as possible, so we are following the directives from the state and Diocese to protect everyone.
We are learning day to day and adjusting as people feel more comfortable joining us in the church. It is a challenge to “guess” how many will be coming and so I am asking you to be patient with us if we make a mistake, and to remember, “A mistake is not a sin!” This past Sunday we had a few glitches and will make sure we are better prepared for the weekends ahead. Ushers and greeters will be available to seat people safely. If you arrive after Mass has begun, come through the double glass doors and someone will help you find a seat. I know the church looks full when you are standing in the back, but from where I am sitting, I know there are plenty of seats available. The ushers are keeping an accurate count of how many enter the building, so there is no need to worry.
This Sunday I did not estimate the numbers of communions we needed. As a result, some came to receive communion and Deacon Tom gave a blessing. I had no idea there would be such a large jump in people attending. I will make sure we are better prepared.
Being church is a different way is a challenge, and we do not have all the answers. Help us out! If you see ways, we can improve the safety and protection, the welcome and hospitality of everyone as we gather, please share your ideas with the office. It is important that we navigate this pandemic together. We are addressing Faith Formation, Thrift Shop, community building, and all aspects of community life as we journey ahead. Bottom line; we will be community and church in a much different way that we were before, there is no turning back. It will take pooling our wisdom to make us the vibrant community we have been, and the strong and vibrant community we are called to be as we move toward a new future together.
