“A cloud hangs over us all.” Sunday we had a wonderful celebration here at Sacred Heart. More than 300 people gathered for the 9:30 Mass as we celebrated two baptisms, welcoming Emma Hastings and Grace Infascelli as children of God; celebrating the children and team who attended Vacation Bible School this past week who shared two of the songs they learned during their time together. We also had an opportunity to bless three of members of the class of 2018 heading off the college this week; Catherine Hodgens and Connor and Cassidy Adams.
Hanging over me and maybe others was a cloud of pain, anger and frustration regarding crimes committed by Catholic priests thought the past decades and Bishops who failed to respond appropriately. In my twelve years in the Office for Youth Ministry I always kept my eyes and ears open, aware that the faith development and the spiritual lives of our youth can be so fragile. The joys of ministering with the young church of Worcester and the adults who serve them throughout our 128 parishes had so very many rewards for me and our staff. I have many stories that still come to mind and hold in the depths of my heart. Also in my heart is the pain, anger and frustration of having to report two brother priests for their inappropriate actions.
I realize that many may desire to distance themselves from church because of these circumstances, however this is a time when we need to support each other and be on this journey together. Isolation is never going to help; it will only hinder a process of healing. I have no clue where God is going with all of this. But I trust that God is always present on the journey. Know that the church is open daily if you need a quiet place to pray. If you need a place to vocalize to and cry out to God, you are welcome. If you need to talk, know that I am available.
The blessing of sacramental grace, faith formation and accomplishments were flowing through all of us as we gathered together in faith. May our gathering together help to lift the cloud that hangs over us all!
